Due to the exceptional state of emergency currently in Catalonia resulting from the prolonged period of drought, the Catalan Water Agency requires water usage titleholders to reduce water consumption by certain percentages compared to their situation under normal conditions.
In this case, since the situation is an emergency, as indicated by levels below, consumption must be reduced by 25%.
Objective saving levels for industrial uses and similar in each drought state
- Industrial uses: Saving compared to normality
- Pre-alert: 0%
- Alert: 5%
- Exception: 15%
- Emergency: 25%
However, the titleholders of these usages may choose to propose a Water Saving Plan to the ACA that is compatible with the rest of the provisions of the Drought Special Plan (DSP).
Once this Water Saving Plan is presented, the ACA can resolve a lower reduction percentage, taking into account the particularities of each use.
Objectives of the Water Saving Plan (WSP)
- To avoid homogeneous and indiscriminate restrictions on water consumption, so that they are consistent with the particularities of each industry.
- To encourage users' ability to face and manage drought episodes
- To stimulate continuous improvement in the efficiency of water use in the industrial sector with all its particularities
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can request the adjustment of the objective saving thresholds?
Any titleholder of a concession for the use of waters in Catalonia's internal basins. For example, an industrial use well.
When can the WSP be presented?
Ideally, it should be presented before entering the corresponding drought scenario. However, the submission period will remain open.
Why request a WSP?
So that the concession holder can benefit from a relaxation in the reduction percentage demanded by the DSP by default (25% at the emergency point we are currently at).
How can TMI assist you with the WSP?
We can help you create the plan and present it. Just write to us and explain your case, and one of our environmental consultants will advise you.
